Healthy Eating for Managing HIV/AIDS
HIV Healthy Eating

Good nutrition is vital for people living with HIV/AIDS. A balanced diet can strengthen your immune system, improve your overall health, and help your body handle the effects of HIV and its treatment.

Tips for Healthy Eating:

1. Eat a Balanced Diet:

    • Include a mix of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in every meal.
    • Examples: Brown rice, spinach, chicken breast, and avocado.

2. Boost Your Immune System:

    • Incorporate foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc and selenium.
    • Examples: Citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.

3. Stay Hydrated:

    • Drink plenty of water to help your body process medications and flush out toxins. Aim for 6-8 glasses daily.

4. Manage Side Effects of Medication:

    • If you experience nausea, try eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoid greasy or spicy foods.
    • For diarrhea, opt for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (BRAT diet).

5. Limit Processed Foods:

    • Reduce your intake of sugary, salty, and highly processed foods to support heart and overall health.

6. Maintain a Healthy Weight:

    • If you’re losing weight, include high-calorie and nutrient-dense foods like peanut butter, smoothies, and full-fat yogurt.
