World Health Day:
World Health Day

On 7 April, the world celebrates World Health Day to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. This global health awareness day highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world – and this year’s focus is the climate crisis.

Under the theme ‘Our planet, our health’, the WHO will focus and prioritize the actions that are urgently needed to keep us humans and our planet healthy.  Did you know that climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity? According to the WHO, over 13 million deaths annually are due to environmental causes, and could have been avoided. This is why taking part in World Health Day is important for everyone in society. Protecting our planet starts with us, so we’ve put together 10 tips of things we can do to help save our planet.

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. You’ve probably heard the three Rs of responsible waste management at some point in your life. These three Rs are necessary for conserving natural resources. Buying food in bulk is a good way to reduce packaging waste, as well as reusing old jars and containers instead of throwing them away, and buying goods made from recycled material are all way to exercise the three Rs.
  • Make a difference where you live, work, or learn. Get involved in your local community cleanups and help keep a shoreline or the streets clean.
  • The world faces several global health challenges, ranging from the growing obesity rates to environmental pollution. When you learn about these urgent matters, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.
  • Save water. We do not have an endless supply of water, so caring for it properly can help maintain our sources, keeping them pure and safe for generations to come.
  • Shop wisely. Buy less plastic or invest in a recyclable bag, locally made from recycled materials by a local supplier.
  • Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room!
  • Reduce your carbon footprint. Travel responsibly and try finding alternative ways to get to work or the shops, like walking or cycling wherever you can.
  • Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help fight climate change. Make sure it is indigenous!
  • Don’t send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office and don’t flush expired medicine down the loo – rather take it to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.
  • Bike or walk more. Drive less.

Nature looks after us, it’s up to us look after nature in return
